On September 10th I had the opportunity to participate in the Conversations That Matter Youth Forum surrounding SROs, racism, police brutality and more. Thank you to the MCPD leadership, SROS and the other student participants. The biggest take away for me is the lack of communication to students about what SROs are and why they were initially implemented into schools. As well as the need for more mental health professionals and resources in public schools. I am concerned for the mental health of my peers, especially due to the prevalent situations regarding racial injustices and the criminal justice systems concerning demographics. I see both the benefits and disadvantages of the SRO program, but I hope to ensure that student voices are heard regarding this issue in the future. At the end of the day it affects them the most.
